The Story Behind the Piece
Are you someone who has complex emotions at the thought of Mother’s Day?
Mother’s Day is often described as a joyful day, and for many people, it is. But for others, the day can bring grief, tension, longing, disappointment, complicated family histories, infertility, loss, or emotions that are hard to name.
Complex Realities was inspired by someone in my circle, and it was important to me to create a piece that shed light on the emotional complexity many people carry around motherhood and Mother’s Day.
The painting includes several symbolic details: the expression on the chicken’s face, the lack of significant detail in the chicks below her, the plant growing out of a broken egg, the blood streak near the corner, the splatter, and the touches of gold. Each element points to the tension between pain and life, breakage and growth, heaviness and beauty.
This piece does not try to flatten motherhood into one emotion. It leaves room for the full range.
